To My Almost Six Year Old

Man. Owen, you are one awesome almost six year old.

You love baseball. You listened to the Braves all season on your radio at night and watched the game recaps in the morning. I never knew there was such a thing as a four seam fastball or a two seam fastball until now. I also have never played so much backyard baseball in my life. You are so sweet to me, telling me "You're not the worst at pitching." You always have a game going on in your mind, in the backyard, on your bed with your baseball cards, or in the kitchen with a tennis ball. Your very first little league season was canceled because of COVID, but you still enjoyed other sports like soccer and basketball. You are quick and intuitive when it comes to sports. I love watching you play.

You are a creature of habit and thrive on knowing what to expect. I can always count on you to come out of your room at night and ask me to guess which verse you are reading in your devotional book, or to come up to me and say, "Mom...um...mom...um..." and never remember what it was you were going to say. You love hunting bugs with AK and watching football with Claire. You say funny things like "What's that bug? I've never seen that one before. That one is a weird kabob." Or, "I wonder why gnomes are called gnomes. I'm glad they're not metronomes. I don't like metronomes at all."

You are a deep thinker still. I feel like you are always thinking about things deeply before you ever verbalize anything. We were recently camping and you said, "You know what's really good about camping? I don't have to go outside to spit." You are full of questions and thoughts and it's one of my greatest delights to hear you say them.

When you get an idea, you're all in. The other night you decided to make pictures for everyone in our family and you stayed up in your room for hours until you were done. You also love calendars and dates (you check off the date on your wall calendar every day) and decided that every November 2 from now on (since that was the date of your idea) you would make everyone in our family a picture. You love plans, and you love to make people happy.

Overall, you are a quiet soul, serious but sometimes silly, a philosopher by nature. You are smart, brave, and you love to wrestle with your Daddy or play with your sisters or snuggle with me.

Basically, you are the best son and brother we could ask for. You are a delight and a gift to everyone who knows you.

Happy birthday, my sweet almost six year old!!!

  1. Sweet little boy, this Owen... His smile is like the sun popping out of the clouds. His little hugs are reminders of things that are important in life.

My husband said that the Lord gave me this Owen close at hand, so I wouldn't miss my other Owen (in Iowa) so much.

This whole family is a treasure to our neighborhood.
